Enochian magic is a complex system that requires dedication and rigourous study. One important part of modern Enochian magic is Enochian chess, first played in the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, and more recently extended and by Steve Nichols. From these studies, various groups and authors have created a highly functional system of magic. Modern occultists have found it difficult to reconstruct the Enochian systen, although great success has been achieved from studyingh the original manuscripts from the Sir Hans Sloane collection in the British Museum. However, Crowley’s most famous work on the Enochian system is The Vision and the Voice ( Liber 418), which detail his his visions formed after from working with the Calls of the Aethyrs (from the Enochian Keys). Crowley’s first work on Enochian was Liber Chanokh, which details the Golden Dawn’s understanding of the Enochian magic sytem. Crowley can be credited with the widespread use of Enochian by modern occultists and magicians. Aleister Crowley had an extensive knowledge and practical experience with Enochian magic. However, the knowledge and instructions from the Golden Dawn were somewhat limited, being based on a single diary of John Dee. It is through the Golden Dawn that Enochian Magic has become so well known, after the release of their once secret teachings by Israel Regardie and Aleister Crowley. Enochian Magic was popularised by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, primarily through the writings and instructions of Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers.
The Enochian system of magic relates to the secrets contained in the Book of Enoch, and John Dee may well have have known of the existence of the Slavonic Book of the Secrets of Enoch. There are similarities between the Enochian texts and various grimoires, such as the Heptameron. Dee and Kelley received instructions from angels and wrote them down in journals, including the Enochian Alphabet and a table of correspondences. It is a system of ceremonial magic based on the evocation and commanding of spirits. Enochian Magic is based on the writings of Dr.
